Our self-paced Coaching Foundations program empowers leaders to achieve their mission and goals by improving retention, strengthening culture, and developing leadership capacity.
This program provides you with high quality instruction while saving you time and money.
You are not alone in navigating the leadership crisis. Across the globe, team members continue to report low levels of leadership development, an issue that is costing organizations an estimated $550 billion annually. This takes away from the already limited resources orgs have to achieve their goals.
Who is this for?
Aspiring leaders, managers & Directors and C-suite leaders supporting team members within nonprofit, education, and mission-driven organizations. Consultants who support these leaders.
What will you earn?
You will earn a 20-hour Foundations for Social Impact Leadership Coaching Certificate to share with partners and on your resume. Digital badges also available for LinkedIn and email signatures.
How it Works
We use Mighty Network to house our interactive coaching materials. Leaders complete six modules at their own pace. Each module includes a combination of reading, skill development, tools and templates, and coaching demonstrations to bring the work into practice. While this is online and self-paced, we still get to know all of our participants. You are not just another number.
You will also be able to:
– Access a class forum where you can ask questions, share reflections, and build connections with other leaders in the program.
– Priority access to live quarterly Coaching Clinics to continue practicing and refining your skills in community.
Leaders who complete the program are able to:
One-on-One Coaching
Apply coaching skills to facilitate one-on-one conversations that navigate tension, strengthen accountability, and deepen trust.
Strengthen Culture
Build and sustain a coaching culture that supports both team performance and individual growth.
Measure Success
Evaluate team member growth using structured performance evaluations systems and leadership assessments.
Relational Intelligence
Integrate relational intelligence and SEL skills so that humans can work with AI rather than be replaced.

Our goal is to make this program accessible and equitable to eliminate barriers. That’s why we’ve priced it comparably to the average conference, while offering even more value. By the end of the program, you’ll earn a certificate, join a supportive community, and complete everything at your own pace right from home. And if we notice you’ve slowed down or haven’t checked in for a while, we’ll reach out with a gentle nudge to keep you moving forward.

This program is grounded in both practice and research. A highly selective advisory group of practitioners and researchers has contributed to the design and validation of the Messy Roots Coaching Framework, including the curriculum, ethics, and competencies. This ensures that your learning is not only practical, but aligned with the evolving needs of social impact leadership. Click here to view the advisory team.

Yes. For high schoolers we recommend having an adult facilitator to support them with the more challenging concepts.

Yes. Email Grow@messyroots.org to request additional learning accommodations.

Yes. At the end of each module, participants complete a quiz, with at least two opportunities to pass at a minimum score of 80%.

Yes. After completing all modules, participants will take a final assessment and submit a sample coaching video demonstrating the skills they’ve learned. To successfully complete the program, participants must earn an 85% or higher on the final assessment and receive a score of at least 3 out of 4 on the coaching rubric.

No. Our Messy Roots Coaching Academy is our full coaching certification program. This course offers a discounted pathway into that program.

While this is not a full coaching certification, hours from this program may be applied toward ICF certification requirements.
